A New Chapter In My Life

Next week begins a new chapter in my life. I applied for a job at many of the local hospitals. It is taking photos of the newborn babies. Above are some of the photos I have taken along with the business cards I have ordered. I thought it would be a perfect job for me because I love babies and taking photos. I am excited to enter back in the work force but at the same time I am a little torn about leaving my youngest and still being able to get everything done. The first 7 days I will be working each day for 5 hours then my hours will vary.

My blogging has had to take the back burner between orientations, online testing, training and visits to the doctor. I feel blessed with this opportunity. The fact that they are willing to train me is something I never thought would be offered at no cost. For years I had debated going back to school but it did not fit in the schedule with family time nor did we have the extra money. I will still be publishing this blog it just may not be as much until I have established a routine.

My family is the most important thing so I am praying that the schedule works with all the things we have going on. Our son is 10 and this will mean more time home alone. His sister is 16 but is working. Some days she will be able to be with him others she will not. It is a part time job. I know that he will be okay but it still is tugging a bit on my heart. I have always been the mom there for everything. I have never missed things at school. I am asking God to lead me down this path. If it does work out it will be wonderful. If not I can at least say I tried. Thank you all for being continued readers of my blog and for your support! I will keep you all posted as things move along.

Being a Christian is more than something you claim.....

Pastor Jeremiah Steepek (pictured below) transformed himself into a homeless person and went to the 10,000 member church that he was to be introduced as the head pastor at that morning. He walked around his soon to be church for 30 minutes while it was filling with people for service....only 3 people out of the 7-10,000 people said hello to him. He asked people for change to buy food....NO ONE in the church gave him change. He went into the sanctuary to sit down in the front of the church and was asked by the ushers if he would please sit n the back. He greeted people to be greeted back with stares and dirty looks, with people looking down on him and judging him.
As he sat in the back of the church, he listened to the church announcements and such. When all that was done, the elders went up and were excited to introduce the new pastor of the church to the congregation........"We would like to introduce to you Pastor Jeremiah Steepek"....The congregation looked around clapping with joy and anticipation.....The homeless man sitting in the back stood up.....and started walking down the aisle.....the clapping stopped with ALL eyes on him....he walked up the altar and took the microphone from the elders (who were in on this) and paused for a moment....then he recited
“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’
After he recited this, he looked towards the congregation and told them all what he had experienced that morning...many began to cry and many heads were bowed in shame.... he then said....Today I see a gathering of people......not a church of Jesus Christ. The world has enough people, but not enough disciples...when will YOU decide to become disciples? He then dismissed service until next week.......Being a Christian is more than something you claim. I'ts something you live by and share with others.

Make a Whole Year's Worth of Laundry Detergent for $30

The cost of laundry detergent seems to keep getting more and more expensive with each passing week.

Making your own laundry detergent can help you to save a lot of money.

I found a great article to help you make your own laundry detergent for a whole year for only $30!

years supply of laundry detergent

Regular readers of this blog will know that I am completely sold on the No-Grate Laundry Detergent that I posted back in February of this year.  But, like I’ve said many times on this website, I am always open to new ideas! And I really liked this idea that someone posted as a comment awhile back.

A YEARS worth of Laundry Soap!?!?  That’s an idea that is hard NOT to get behind!  Plus, I’ve been curious about the “dry” version of homemade laundry detergent that so many people are fond of. I have never tried it before. I figured it’s high time I did!

Here is the recipe that Anonymous posted (the text in red are my notes):
Anonymous said…
I make a dry version which works better for my family. I hate storing the bottles, shaking it up, and making it more often. I only make it once and it lasts for the entire year for our family of 4.
3 bars Fels Naptha, grated ($1.33 x 3)
1 box Borax  ($5.85  -  76 ounces)
1 box Washing Soda ($4.07  -  55 ounces)
2 cups of baking soda ($0.53 cents)
2 containers of Dollar Tree Oxyclean (I bought mine at Family Dollar store…SUN Brand…$4.00 each)
1-2 containers of Purex fabric softener crystals ($6.97  -  28 ounces)
Use 2 tablespoons per load. Put it right in the barrel if you have an HE washer.
To grate the bars of soap I decided to make it easier on myself and use my ancient Hamilton Beach food processor. I figured if it broke in the process it would give me a good excuse to get a new one! But fortunately (unfortunately?) it handled the soap just fine. I would offer one tip though if you decide to use your food processer to “grate” your soap: add something else to the bowl to aid in the process. I added a cup of the SUN Oxygen Bleach to each bar when I processed it. It seemed to help the blades do their job better.

My only other tip for this recipe has to do with the “mixing”. Once you add everything, you have a LOT of ingredients to mix together. I decided to put it all in a kitchen garbage bag (doubled) and tumble it all together. Just tie it off tight and turn it over a handful of times and you’re good to go! Now you have a nicely integrated batch of laundry detergent that should last a family of four ONE YEAR!

years supply of laundry detergent

Since we are over the “family of four” limit, and I tend to think we have more dirty laundry than your AVERAGE family…I’m not expecting this to last a full year….but based on my initial use of this (2 Tablespoons per load)….it’s going to last us a GOOD, LONG time! I did half a dozen loads of laundry with it before we left on vacation and was completely satisfied with the results! So much so that I’m planning on making TWO MORE BATCHES when I get home from vacation to give to my daughter AND my daughter-in-law. :-)  Fun gift idea don’t you think?

50 Things Money Can't Buy

Homemade Krispy Kremes — Yes, this is the actual recipe!

Ingredients:
3 tbsp milk
3 tbsp boiling water
1 tsp dry active yeast
8 oz all purpose flour (a little under 2 cups - I recommend you measure and weigh. See my note above)
1 1/2 oz sugar (about 3 tablespoons)
1 egg
1 oz butter, cold to room temperature (just don't melt it, okay?)
dash of salt

Enough oil to cover the bottom few inches of a wok, or a deep fryer.

Directions:
In a large measuring jug, combine the milk and boiling water. Add a teaspoon of the sugar and the yeast. Stir it gently, then leave it in a warm place for the yeast to activate (aka foam).
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, the rest of the sugar, and the salt. Cut in the butter using your fingers or a pastry blender, until it resembles crumbs.
Add the egg (give it a quick beat) and yeast mixture to the flour mix, and mix into a smooth dough. This usually takes about 5 minutes of mixing.
Turn the dough out onto a lightly-floured counter and knead for about 5 to 10 minutes—it should feel springy and little bubbles should form under the surface. Place it back in the bowl, cover with a cloth or plastic wrap, and let rise for about an hour until double in size.
Once risen, place the dough onto the counter and cut it into 4 pieces. One piece at a time, stretch it into a long rope about an inch to an inch and a half wide. Cut strips about an inch long, ball em up with your hands, and place them on a baking tray or wire rack to wait.
Cover the doughnuts holes with a cloth to rise while you heat the oil to 375F.
Place the doughnuts into the oil and fry until golden brown on each side, about 2 minutes. Be sure to fry only a few at a time so they don’t overcrowd and stick together.
Drain on a paper towel or wire rack over a cloth, before glazing them. Be sure to glaze them warm, or else they won’t get that delicious coverage!

Glaze:
1/3 cup butter
2 cups confectioners' sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
4 tablespoons hot water or as needed

A brief note: I recommend a scale, as not all flours (and cup measurements) are made equal.
2 cups of my Canadian flour in my Canadian cups on my scale might be more or less than yours.
If you don't have a scale, start at 1 1/2 cups and work your way up from there.

Biscuit CINNAMON Roll!!

WOW these look Awesome and Delicious!!!

Sticky Bun Breakfast Ring:
2 small tubes refrigerator buttermilk biscuits OR 1 tube Pillsbury Grands buttermilk biscuits
3 Tbsp. butter, melted
1/2 C. pancake syrup (any brand you like, I used Mrs. Buttersworth)
1/3 C. packed light brown sugar
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 C. chopped pecans, optional
1/4 C. chopped almonds, optional

Instructions:
Spray a fluted pan with non-stick spray. Combine the melted butter and syrup in a small bowl and set aside. In another bowl, combine the brown sugar, cinnamon, and nuts (if desired). Place about half of the syrup mixture in the bottom of the pan. Then sprinkle half of the brown sugar mixture on top. Lay the biscuits on the bottom of the pan, overlapping edges (closely together) to form a ring. Top with remaining syrup and sugar mixtures. Bake at 375 degrees for approximately 20-25 minutes or until golden brown. Cool for 1 minute in the pan, then invert onto a serving platter and enjoy!
** You can use 1 1/2 tubes of the Pillsbury Grands buttermilk biscuits if 1 doesnt' seem like enough) and bake it for about 30 minutes.

Navy officer surprises family at Mud Hens game on 4th of July

Please see here to view the video and watch the story
TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - A local family received a big surprise at the Mud Hens game Thursday night.
It was supposed to be a family reunion at the airport on Friday, July 5, but Chief Petty Officer David Schuster of the U.S. Navy wanted to do things a little differently.
The Schuster and Ricard families were brought to Fifth Third Field to see a special message from Schuster.
"They told me he was going to get a Hometown Heroes award," explained Schuster's mother Pat Ricard.
While watching the video – which was taped three days before on the flight deck of the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower – they had no idea what was coming.
"He was there," Ricard said tearfully. "It's hard to say. I haven't seen him in almost two years, so it was nice seeing him. I miss him."
"I've never done anything like that before in my life," Schuster said of his part. "Just to surprise somebody to that caliber is amazing…[It's] just as heartwarming to be the person involved with the military homecoming as it is to watch it on TV."
A Berkey native, Schuster has been serving in the Navy for 13 years, and is returning home from a 9-month tour. A single dad of two daughters, he says he couldn't have asked for a better day to pull off the surprise.
"A lot of people forget. We have Independence Day, and we have a military that's always fought for us, and having a homecoming on the Fourth of July is just the epitome of it," he said.
"He's very dedicated to his job, he loves the Navy," Ricard said. "And he's a very dedicated dad, and he's just – [I] couldn't be more proud of him."
Welcome home, Chief Petty Officer Schuster, and happy Independence Day.
